Building the Future of Geospatial Excellence in South Australia

Flinders University Pioneers Next-Gen Geospatial Education with New Trimble Technology Lab, Supported by UPG

A significant contribution from global technology leader Trimble is set to transform research and education opportunities at Flinders University in South Australia. For the first time at an Australian university, a state-of-the-art Geospatial Trimble Technology Laboratory (TTL) has been established, poised to empower future graduates and professionals across surveying, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geospatial, and urban planning degrees.

Professor Alistair Rendell, Vice-President and Executive Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at Flinders University, highlighted the importance of this collaboration. “The opening of the new Trimble Technology Lab, co-sponsored by Trimble’s authorised distribution partner UPG, will support Flinders University’s new Bachelor of Surveying and Bachelor of Geospatial Information Systems programs,” he stated.

Trimble and UPG have a long-standing partnership dating back to 1992, consistently bringing cutting-edge technology and innovation to Australia. This collaboration has been instrumental in helping organisations remain at the forefront of gathering, analysing, and utilising geospatial data.

The Trimble Technology Lab at Flinders University provides advanced tools for students and researchers – including Anawim (Wim) Aaron, an Australia Awards student from the Philippines.

“Technology is constantly changing and this donation means our course curriculum will include real-world examples of the latest trends in GIS, surveying, and urban planning, in addition to other technology advancements in the future,” added Professor Rendell.

Flinders University stands alone in South Australia as the only institution to offer a degree in GIS and Surveying. Launched in 2024, the four-year double degree program provides comprehensive training, equipping graduates with the essential skills needed to enter a training agreement and become licensed surveyors.

The Trimble Technology Lab at Flinders University will provide academics, students, and researchers with unparalleled access to cutting-edge technology across three pivotal areas: GNSS Solutions, Positioning Solutions, and Software Solutions. This hands-on experience will ensure students are job-ready, proficient in the tech skills most sought after by industry and government.
